Despite strong competition from a record number of entries, this year’s winning building by Belfast-based Hamilton Architects is a shining example of bad architecture and bad planning
This year architecture’s only prize for sheer downright ugliness has seen a record number of entries: buildings so drab, hostile, or puffed up with their own self-importance they made you queasy, angry and depressed.

The winner is the building that shows how bad architecture and bad planning can combine to produce something truly awful — a building so ugly it can turn human flesh to stone or at the very least make grown men cry.

These arguments only got going when it came to deciding an order for the final three: Make’s Amenity building for Nottingham University, Belfast-based Hamilton Architects’ Ferry Terminal in Liverpool and Queen Margaret University campus, Lothian by Dyer Associates.
In the end the three judges, BD’s buildings editor Ellis Woodman, BD columnist and critic Owen Hatherley and architect Sean Griffiths of Fat were split between the Nottingham and Liverpool buildings.
Both buildings are appalling, they said, but after much deliberation they decided that, given the damage inflicted by the ferry terminal on what is a Unesco world heritage site, it was the more worthy recipient.
“It is such an amazing site, directly in front of the Three Graces, but the architects seem barely to have noticed. It is like letting a bad second-year student build next to St Peter’s,” said the judges despairingly.
“This is bad patronage by an ignorant council which thinks having jazzy architecture is putting the city on the map again.”
Completed this summer by Hamilton Architects (not to be confused with Hamiltons) the £9.5 million building incorporates ferry operations, a Beatles museum and a rooftop restaurant. It is cantilevered on two sides and clad in limestone to complement the new Liverpool Museum next door.
“The architect evidently once looked at a Zaha building in a magazine,” said the judges. “It is essentially a horrible sectional idea that has been extruded like a stick of rock. The long elevations couldn’t be more tedious, the Dr Caligari end facades no more grotesque. When you go there you think: oh no, I can’t believe they’ve done that.

Were back on centre stage after all the investment in the city over the past decade we were told the new dawn had arrived and we were there to compete with the rest of the world proudly proclaiming our new found status as European Capital of Culture, Mercantile and Maritime World Heritage Site. Well that's what they told us only the pathetic twassers running the place did not have the talent or the education to compete on a footing that fitted the charitable status bestowed upon us to pull us out of the doldrums to make us a city worthy of the people who live here.It is such an amazing site, directly in front of the Three Graces, but the architects seem barely to have noticed. We now have another accolade as if to prove it 2009 winner of the Building Design Magazine Carbuncle Cup. Yes that new Terminally ill designed Ferry Terminal in the middle of the world heritage site that the Dame of Disaster Doreen Jones passed.

Warren Bradley even has the cheek to defend it he is such a blag. Bringing out the old "There was controversy when they built the Liver Building" crap that he readily bandies about to anyone uneducated enough to listen and there are some who have believed him. There is no evidence for this at all.

I was there at the planning meeting arguing against this. When the criminal Councillor Steve Hurst tried to stop me talking and giving advice to the planning committee on just how bad this carbuncle was to be when erected. Maybe if the planning office and its rubber stamping planning committee poodles, playing politics with our world heritage site listened, we wouldnt be in such a mess.

Lady Dorian Gray passed the plans, the Doyenne of Disaster pretended that she was forced to do so. She nearly had me crying...with laughter what a joke. Steve Hurst the criminal who is mates and being supported by Warren Bradley, was on the committee. They tried to stop me objecting in a disgraceful manner playing Spivs-R-Us with planning laws. Caroline Innes covered the meeting and Larry Neild the then city editor of the Daily Ghost said "Caroline doesnt know any of them its her first meeting and she come back in to the office and said what a disgraceful and disgusting bunch of people" (the committee). Not my words.
The Captain of the Floating Palace the Crown Princess stood on the deck and was asked what makes the trip to Liverpool special.

We are now well and truly rumbled and the City Council acting as Spivs-R-Us promised us Regeneration and they have give us the slums of the future on Princess Dock and filled it in, yes the jerks filled it in. The only development I had supported in the world heritage site was the proposals to build foating homes on Princes Dock and they refused it. Afterwards I realised why...because its ony 2ft deep. And now apparently the Ferry Terminal isn't very good either, some say. I wonder what those at BBA will make of Three Ugly Sisters at Mann Island and the White Elephant museum.

PIER HEAD FERRY TERMINAL, LIVERPOOL BY HAMILTON ARCHITECTS
Hmm, I wonder what they've been putting in the tea at Hamilton Architects? The practice has what you might euphemistically describe as a 'mixed' portfolio, ranging from fugly Georgiana to a plasticky hospital. But here they were clearly given a bit of a budget, and decided to give free reign to their frustrated avant-gardism. It riffs on the new (and nearby) Museum of Liverpool by 3XN, with a stone-clad slightly angular form. they've then gone ahead and made some hideously ill-considered glazed cut outs that collide horribly with the already deeply questionable geometry. This building is what happens when a bad architect reads a few too many architecture magazines, and think that doing shapes is a good idea. The result is this anti-context, anti-scale, uncivilised building, exuding a staggering lack of decorum on the benighted World Heritage Site that is Liverpool's waterfront. When shit practices do shapes, it also reveals the absolute stupidity and rampant subjectivity of architecture today. This was the winner of an international competition - the jury probably thought they were getting a B-team Libeskind or something. Liverpool people will be relieved to hear that the programme of this building is an absolutely essential addition to the city's cultural landscape - a second Beatles Museum. The museum promises a "magical journey through the music of the Beatles, complete with motion, sound and water". Sounds like a museological f**king revolution. According to the architect, the building has become popular with 'photographers' because of its 'quirky' 'angles'. Unfortunately, as you can see from the photos above, it has become popular with really sh*t photographers, who barely know how to hold their cameras up straight.

Hideous and abominable as some of these developments are, I think you have to go a long way to beat Liverpool 1 Park Gone West Apartments which as I prove were actually based on a toilet product. Museum of Liverpool- Is Nominated for Building Design Carbuncle Cup 2010 .

This year it is the new Museum of Liverpool, and it stands a good chance of winning too. The Terrible Ferry Terminal building in the words of the architects was designed to compliment the new museum !!! Yes and they managed it only, not being educated in the requisite skills to design in a world heritage site, Hamiltons, the Belfast based architects didn’t realise they were following the lines of a bigger carbuncle than theirs. At first glance, the new National Museum in Rome looks just like the ferry terminal in Liverpool which won this year’s Carbuncle Cup (Features August 28)

It is only when one reads Ellis Woodman’s excellent review of the building as “displaying a cynical disregard for its purpose” that it is clearly by your old favourite Zaha Hadid. Once again, one might have expected better from a total outlay of €150 million.

Still, I do like the little orange hydrant in front of the entrance.

Matt Brook the poor excuse for an Architect. He of World Heritage disaster at Mann Island will have to accept the prize there can be no other more worthy winner for the 2011 Carbuncle Cup award than the atrocious Three Black Coffins built by Broadway Malyan for Neptune Developments.

They promised us Iconic and give us Ichronic, an anachronism of bad design plonked bang slappo in the world heritage site despoiling the best views of Liverpool, cherished views, they turn Liverpool's World Heritage Site into World Heritage S*ite.

There is no other way to describe it.

It is like giving a pretty girl a black eye and then knocking her teeth out and then saying now you cant smile anymore.

It appears that the idiotic and cranky looking Ferry Terminal is now attracting the attention of the national architectural media. Not sure if the previous blogs are anything to do with this but it certainly is the sort of headline that we warned the pathetic planners would happen. Incidentally the World Heritage Officer...yes we have one even though he has been a utter waste of time, said this was one of his favorite buildings and its all a matter of taste. To then have the architects of the new museum 3XN criticizing the terminal for not blending in with the world heritage site is a bit rich. I think it fits with the museum perfectly, its just that they both ignored the fact that there are three classical pieces of architecture adjacent.

It was pulled apart by Private Eye before the planning application was at the planning committee. Oh and those clever members of the planning committee bringing all their architectural experience in to play and making a deliberated decision. Spivs-R-Us. You could write that, what the whole of the planning committee knew about architecture you could fit on the back of a postage stamp....in the top right hand corner. This is in Louise Ellmans constituency. Building Design's 2009 Carbuncle Cup Nominations. Two Entries for Liverpool

BD magazine, the Architects Weekly have had a lot of nominations for this years Carbuncle Cup. Liverpool is in the unfortunate situation of having two nominations for this years Carbuncle.
LPT nominated the horrendous One Park "Gone" West as a crime against architecture the building they, promised us would be Ichonic and it turns out Ichronic. The architect, if that's what you would wish to call him did not even visit the city. Less than half a mile away is the Terminal Ferry Building nominated by David Swift. It has to be a close run thing between these two monsters. If you would have told me you could build a worse building then the old Bernie's Inn, The Shanghai Palace, I would have declared it couldn't be done. Well they did it. What an achievement...only its the wrong achievment for sure. The World Heritage Site has been despoiled, in such a way that it is akin to giving a pretty girl a black eye. The Ferry Terminal is a perfect match to the new museum, which could well be next years nomination for the carbuncle cup, if they ever finish it. BANNED FROM THE DAILY POST.

I was recently banned from the Daily Post by the editor Mark Thomas. He had hit the roof for, amongst other things calling the paper Trinity "Smoking" Mirrors Group. I have been unhappy with the way the editorials had been going for some time. A disregard for our culture and I had said the Post had become a Council mouthpiece. I cant even read the Echo it is that bad. I must have filled editions for them over the years and have given them countless front pages, with or without my name on it. I then, reluctantly at the request of one of the more respected journalists on the paper took down the critical posts on the basis that there were things that had to be said that need the press. I felt unhappy about this as the whole reason for editing the LPT pages was because of the frustration at what is going on within my city.
I subsequently spoke to Helen Hunt after I phoned the news editor asking for someone a bit more experienced than the youngsters I had been speaking to. (Andy Kelly was on holiday) I was reporting the 33rd Unesco World Heritage committee meeting in Seville, a most important and pertinent piece of information that the public did not need hidden away from them by the city council. Unesco had stated that not enough was done to educate the public as to World Heritage Site principles. She asked me "Where exactly is the World Heritage Site" There is no hope really. The article and subsequent editorial was a mess. It seemed to be aimed at me in a personal manner.
There was then a sham debate done about Mann Island that was treated as a balanced argument. It was like putting a balanced argument for the Third Reich you get Bernie Eccleston and two other peoples opinions and you make it look like there is another side for something that is fundamentally wrong. Just back in the office after attending the launch of the Go Penguins event, Liverpool's next big public art project to follow on from the Go Superlambananas extravaganza last summer.It looks like it is going to be something special, and will be a big attraction to keep children entertained in the Christmas holidays.

It was a very enjoyable event, complete with live music, ice sculpture penguins, and a first glimpse of the penguins themselves, which schools and artists will be designing and painting in the next few months.The real treat though, was to have the excuse to walk down to the waterfront alongside the Three Graces for the first time in far too long, on a beautiful July evening.The event was staged in the new Mersey Ferry Terminal at the Pier Head, providing a sneak preview of a fantastic building with great views over the river. We also got the chance for an exclusive visit to the Beatles Story's new "4D" cinema, which opens later this month. I'm not going to give away too much, apart from saying It is a brilliant experience, and great fun. I suspect there will be long queues come the summer holidays.The new canal looked magnificent, and the new Museum of Liverpool building is simply breathtaking. I've lived and worked on Merseyside all my life, but this city still has the capacity to delight and surprise me, and take my breath away.I'm going home in a very good mood, tonight.

Liverpools Pier Head, And its New Landmark Caravan Terminal.

Hamiltons the Irish architects (sic) who carbuncled us have been explaining how they arrived at the design for the new Terminal Ferry Carbuncle.

They have released this picture that one of them took on holiday as the inspiration, they go on to explain how they arrived at the shape of the new Caravan Terminal. Er, Ferry Terminal. "This bloke was driving past on a bike with his bedroom attached, and I thought it would be something new to take the caravan design and take it to a different level, make it bigger for a maritime setting, it just happened we didn't think about it too much" One of the Hamiltons crew said. We worked the idea up and Liverpool accepted the designs for its world heritage site.

People love it the editor of the Daily Post praised it as his favourite building and we have had a commendation from the World Heritage Officer John Hinchliffe who said he loves it. We also thought it would match the new museum and think it fits in lovely with the same angular design".

Meanwhile passengers on the recent departure of the Cruise ship, The Black Prince, which left Liverpool last week from the glamorous Langton Dock were amazed it floated back to the Pier Head to catch the tide.

A huge number had lined up on the deck and caused a queue to look over the side. What was all the fuss and some were overheard saying "Is that it it has to be". A massive group joined in, and a big fuss unfurled itself. What was all the fuss one Liverpudlian pushed in to see.

Neil Scales of Miserytravel-Where Is Our Mersey Ferry Landing Stage?

 I was down on the waterfront a couple of weeks ago playing with The Penny Lane Jazz Band. In all the excitement of playing a set of numbers for departing passengers I almost never caught the occasion of a Mersey Ferry stopping at the now redundant Cruise Liner Jetty. But I recall thinking why is that stopping there and not near the Terminal Ferry Carbuncle that N eel Scales, Herr Disector General of U534 commissioned with £12,000,000 of your money......strange I thought.

I then bumped into Rod Holmes in Princes Dock, who is always a nervous wreck when I see him. I told him we had just done a gig and he said he had just come from a Mersey Partnership party at the Albert Dock, how much did that cost us, I thought. 
"Did you notice the three Black Coffins on Mann Island" I asked
"Yes he replied as did numerous people who all seemed to say, Why did they obscure the views of the Three Graces".
Well at least he is honest and complimentary to the work we have done even though at several times I went head to head with him on planning matters. John Daley asked me to do a talk for the WEA about One Park Gone West but I was having a kidney stone done..........painfull, you don't want one of those.
So I agreed the week after to join them at the Terminal Ferry Carbuncle. David a respected colleague of mine joined us. The group were a nice old bunch and John let me fill them in about the council corruption that has taken place that now creates a pigs ear at the Pier Head.
I put a strong argument forward.
It is always nice to support the Workers Education Authority as its where I learnt to etch copper plates and hone my life drawing skills that I now find invaluable.

Liverpool secured the Carbuncle Cup two years ago for Hamilton Architects’ ferry terminal. This ridiculous building won in considerable part because of the damage it did to the view of the Three Graces — the trio of early 20th century buildings providing Liverpool’s defining architectural image.
Sadly, this vandalism to the city’s waterfront was only the start. This year the jury had the ferry terminal’s neighbour, the Museum of Liverpool, to consider. “Our first reaction was that you shouldn’t build here,” Kim Nielsen, the director of 3XN, the Danish practice responsible for its original design, has said. He should have trusted his first instincts.
However, the problem isn’t simply that the building is in the wrong place. Another prime example of decon lite — Hadid’s Maxxi being the all-too-obvious model — this was a voguishly banal design made considerably worse through its botched realisation. In a saga that saw the client taking legal action against both 3XN and its replacement, local practice AEW, the competition-winning project was subjected to multiple dumbings-down, the most cringemaking of which proved the introduction of a slalom course of DDA- compliant ramps at either end of the building.
The Museum of Liverpool came a close second in this year’s Carbuncle Cup but with work soon to complete on Broadway Malyan’s next door Mann Island development — the third of what Hugh Pearman aptly termed The Three Disgraces — Liverpool is in a strong position to reclaim the prize next year.

The huggers want to show that, despite the recent nomination for an architectural wooden spoon and for generally ‘getting it in the neck’, there are people who still care for the 326-apartment, boat-shaped block. So who’s right?

Speaking about the scheme, Pelli said he wanted to ‘to create a modern, striking building, a memorable place to live, with exceptional view of a wonderful waterfront and park’. Meanwhile Guy Butler, senior development manager at project backer Grosvenor, described the prowed block as a ‘building design which has really stuck its head above the parapet and has, without a doubt, vastly improved an area of our city centre which was formerly wasteland.’

David Dunster from the Liverpool School of Architecture said it boasts ‘one of the nastiest looking pieces of standard office glazing since Britain was bombed by the Luftwaffe; and cheap.’ He added: ‘The prow can only be a ghastly reference to Liverpool’s maritime past and conclusive evidence that all architects should be banned from the use of metaphor, simile or metonymy in the next 100 years at least.’

So the PR company seem to be earning their fees and most of the crowd seem to be made up by them and Grosvenor staff. They even tried to get the BBC reporter to wear a badge. "I cant do that he said I work for the BBC.
Then they brought one of the blokes who said he worked with Cesar Pelli.....with a megaphone to direct the 50 people. They had been hoping for 150. I think they did well to get that many people as the six who were not getting paid to be there.

A negative few
DESIGNED by Cesar Pelli and stabbed in the back by a small group of internet surfers on a website, One Park West is bold, modern, thought-provoking and in the right place and definitely at the right time.
Liverpool One is up for the Stirling Prize by the same website, yet one of its iconic buildings is being lambasted by the negative and disgruntled few.
The Pier Head Ferry Terminal has also been drawn into the same nonsense. I personally love its positioning, style and seamless linking of old and new, including its proximity to the Three Graces, the new canal link and the fabulous new museum.
Liverpool is an amazing world- class city and we should all congratulate Merseytravel for their bold new Ferry Terminal and Grosvenor for transforming the city centre. They helped create almost 5,000 new jobs, while bringing iconic retail outlets, a fabulous new Hilton Hotel, a stunning new Chavasse Park and, of course, a great place to set up home in the bold design, that is One Park West.

A colleague of mine went on facebook to check out how its all going and the organiser of it is http://en-gb.facebook.com/jvolpfletcher. She works for a PR company called ThinkPublicity http://www.thinkpublicity.co.uk/ and guess what (if you can stand the annoying website) their clients are Trinity Mirrors Group, Grosvenor and they launched the One Park Worst opening evening. They say they launched LDP the Liverpool Daily Post Business Club.....they say at the launch for Liverpool.com and they are pleased to be associated with Trinity Mirror.

They also have as clients Negresco and a couple of other Guttman enterprises who seem to always go bust and recently went bang and caused outrage when the same owners opened up the same week further down the same road in Lark Lane.

I'm in work then too... Do they not understand our great home is supposed to look like a ship? Explaining that would make all the confusion and bad feeling evaporate i'm sure!

This building is supposed to look like a ship ? The Titanic comes to mind. No bad feelings or confusion, it is truly awful and should sink without trace. Are there enough lifeboats ?
