Then the gamekeeper turns poacher and after becoming Minister for Merseyside and becoming mates with Joe Anderson and adds to the corrupt regime by promoting bad development on behalf of Peel Holdings.

Hezza lives on a massive estate and has been building a legacy for future generations...his garden.

While the idiot has been assisting in the destruction of Liverpool's World Heritage Site while giving the impression he cares.

He was recent signatory to a letter sent to Unesco pleading with them not to delete Liverpool from the World Heritage register.

Not in his back yard but its all right in mine. Shame on you Micheal, Shame.

They build sheds and they build them badly.

The only problem is that they are not supposed to be building sheds they are supposed to building new modern structures that will last.

Engaged by a Grosvenor contractor BDP to build a swanky showpiece structure as part of the Chavasse Park development that opened in 2008, they went for an origami style black building that reflects........well nothing really.....it doesn't match anything around the Park.

Chavasse Park is the bit of green they stole from the public to build cafes restaurants on what was a grassy park.

A bit basic but it was green lung in the city that was used by office workers to let off steam. 

It still is now to some extent but its a lot more stressful now.

Yes they paved Paradise (Street) and put up a parking lot. 

Then you have even more foolish people applauding bad design here is a revue by Sevenstreets.com (probably a paid for advertorial as that's what Sevenstreets do)

And on top of this parking lot Studio Three built a shrivelled up shed.

Just have a laugh at their foolish design.

They were put up for awards for this new snazzy bit of modernism.(sic)

 Praise was lauded onto the new young up and coming company that was about to take the world, or maybe Liverpool by storm. 

Inspired by a crumpled ciggy packet the set about building a bar with sloping sides and roof that must be very confusing when you come out after a half a pint of cider and think you have drunk about 12 pints.

Its all over the place. But the critics loved it. Critics usually know nothing of what they are criticising. This critic does.

This is a perfect example of what happens when the new architectural kids on the block are let loose with their lack of experience.

They build something that looks like it is falling over.

But worse the people responsible did not understand even the most basic of rules.

 That water needs to be taken away from a building.

Especially one that is made of wood, that also is in direct exposure to the sun.

This building saps up water like a sponge because all the angles direct the rain into little pockets that hold it in tight angled places.

Then the sun dries it out and it warps, exposing more of the underneath and then even more water penetrates and you get.......a mushroom farm.

Basic stuff that any simple person would understand.

But apparently not the whizz kids of Studio 3 didn't.

This sort of Jerry building is made even worse by the cost of it rumoured to be a million pounds.

When the wood is removed for repair, after seven years this was a wreck, you then can see that the frame is constantly under attack from the elements and though the mushroom farms look bad just imagine what its like where you cant see.

So great was it that Architects Ellis Williams snapped up the Studio and merged it with the firm.

The reality is that the place has been plumped out by the tragic event of the crane collapsing on a apartment in the Baltic Triangle. So most of them overlooked an eyesore anyhow. What about the three black coffins on Mann Island surely they have noticed the mess at the Pier Head.

The firm behind One Park West was keen to stress it was only a minority of residents who complained, but accepted it was “difficult to please everyone”.

Grosvenor-pools New Water Feature-Or Just Shoddy Workmanship

 Not even 2 years after opening the shoddy work shows. Chavasse Lawn had the worlds press for the unveiling of the abominable "Give Peas a Chance statue", but the reality is the jerry builders who built it have made a mess. Not quite up to the job, inferior materials, and it was not a difficult task in the first place, to knock a few shops up. Maybe they were trying too hard, trying to get too much out of it, greed. To build on Steers Dock reported as the worlds first was always to be controversial but to build a car park on it was damn right disgusting. To raise it 40 foot in the air and cover it with polystyrene was damn right tacky, to cover it with grass that wont grow is a con. It could never last it was poorly thought out and badly constructed. Where is the water going to go...........out through the nearest exit, is where. Now every time it rains the new steps overlooking John Lewis spew out water and they have to be closed. Its a big job to correct this.

They cant get the grass to grow because its waterlogged and a constant, con, I mean job is to pretend it is growing. This combined with the silly idea factory that is the Grosvenor-pool team to do silly things like turn it into beach then it rains every day seems stupid at best.

So it was all 'tarted up' for the worlds media to be sold a dog of a statue Saturday last. New Housing Estate for the Town Centre.

In the spirit of Christmas a new housing estate has sprung up in Lord Street. Or is it a Continental market full of scousers selling stinky cheese?. Right in front of all the shops in this part of town who pay their rates. Grosvenor obviously did not want them blocking access to all those money spinning multi-national companies that have just been given amazing rent free terms to abandon other parts of town for the new swanky part.

It is funny though. Not able to get the result on the pitch those cheeky monkeys have made the name of the gift shop right next to Liverpools…Everton 2. Strange I may hear you think but considering it is in Grosvenor-pool it means that the address reads Everton 2 Liverpool 1. What a result. It is funny though; only in Liverpool would that happen.


Only in Liverpool would millions of pounds of public money have been wasted on allowing Tesco to effectively take control of a football club by bankrolling the move to Kirkby on the Merseyside periphery in fact in the borough of Knowsley. They would have had to change the name of the club to Tesco-ton and have a sock as an emblem breaking all those years of tradition, it wasnt right. How much has been spent of our cash on this.

The Boy Stood on the Burning Deck. Picking His Brain and Wondering, Why?

The boy stood on the burning deck, picking his nose….. No hang on that’s not right. My schoolboy recollections of one the famous and most recognised lines in literature are a little different than the original. “Whence all but he had fled” thats it.. The name of the poem and the story behind it is often forgotten. The poem is Casablanca written by Felicia Hemans, it was first published in 1826.

Giocante was the boy who inspired the poem. His father was Captain Luc-Julian-Joseph de Casablanca. His ship L’Orient was the flagship of Napoleons fleet at the Battle of the Nile.
In Aboukir Bay off Egypt Rear Admiral Horatio Nelson attacked the French ships and the three decks 120 gun L’Orient was set ablaze.

The poem recalls how Giocante refused to leave his post until he gained his fathers permission even though his father is already dead.
The fire is to ignite the ships store of gunpowder and a massive explosion throws parts of the ship all over the Bay.

The poem was published in a periodical called The Monthly Magazine.
They did not discover the carcass of the wreckage till 1983 scattered over more than half a square mile.
Giocante was thought to be all but 12, that was five years older than the vessel he stood upon.

The mast of L’Orient was used as the timber to make the coffin for Nelson who died seven years later at the Battle of Trafalgar.
We commemorate Trafalgar in the Docks of the same name which were filled in by Grosvenor with all the millions of tons of rubble dug out, which is now the car park below Chavasse Lawn, (How did they get away with that).

Liverpool Mercantile and Maritime World Heritage City it seems a bit surreal.
What is even more surreal is that Felicia Hemans house in the world heritage site on Lower Duke Street is standing there falling down along with many, many more of our original Georgian stock. Hanging on a forlorn hope while we continue to build high tensile shopping malls.
What a way to recall our Maritime History by disregarding it. The Duke Street area is still in a precarious state of repair (both pictures are taken fom the same spot) and a lot of hope for the future is now credit crunched along with a lot of our maritime history.

Liverpool Hilton.

Not the worst culprit next to its big ugly sister, One Park Worst on Chavasse Park which came 4th in this years Building Design, the architects weekly, Carbuncle Cup Competition. It is never the less than average addition albeit much lower than the neighbour across the lawn.
Liverpool never won the 2009 Sterling Prize and with average architecture like this it is hardly suprising. See how it now conflicts with the Grade I listed Albert Dock (pic during construction). This is a view taken from Radio City Tower showing the small green space which is 40 ft in the air. Next to the Hilton is an average Bus Station although described by Beatrice Fraenkal as one of her favourites, it is not that functional, it has no-where to lay-over the buses as the old Paradise Street did. The local press are now being buttered up todays headline is a strange one.

It was reported that the land that the new Hilton stands was sold by Grosvenor for 20 million pounds while Liverpool City Council had a deficit of...........20 million.

Liverpool One-They have Stolen Our Streets.

And that's not my words but that apears to be the view of the architect of the recent redevelopment of the Bluecoat.

BDP’s masterplan for Liverpool One may have impressed the architects who drew up the Stirling shortlist, but Hans van der Heijden, architect of the Bluecoat arts centre next door, says its chief aim was to foster a feeling of disconnection with the rest of the city. “Liverpool One does not have a wall. Its wall is invisible, but yet it is clearly marked by the stylistic discontinuity of its architecture,” he tells Anna Minton in her new book Ground Control. Minton’s experience is little better. “I could have been anywhere in Britain or America with a high-end shopping centre… although I had been told the design of the complex faithfully followed the original street pattern, I couldn’t see any street signs.”

So when an Architect who destroyed the Bluecoat with a crass renovation led by English Heretics, leaving it a limp and lifeless space, with a ruined garden, talks about Liverpool One being bad, well we know for sure, we have got a Trafford Park in the city without a roof on. And the backslappers at RIBA want to tell us how great it is......well not for me thanks. They have destroyed the world heritage site with the carbuncle on Chavasse Park that is One Park Worst. They can never be forgiven for dumping that on us. Grosvenor-pool. A city squatting within a city.

When the Fib-Dems PR machine pushed her to the front she was a high flyer in the Fib-Dems.
A councillor in the city for 23 years, Fraenkel (above) hit the headlines following her high-profile defection to the Labour Party. She cant even decide which party she is in.....was she jumped or was she pushed?
Fraenkel said she was ‘embarrassed and ashamed’ of the Liberal Democrat Party and blamed standards at local level for her departure. The Lib Dems hit back, questioning her absence from important meetings.

I am ashamed and embarrassed about the way, she, as design Tsar has manoeuvred herself into such a position. In my opinion she is a talentless confidence trickster. While under her Design Tsar stewardship. in Liverpool we have had such Carbuncles as the Terminal Ferry Building, One Park Worst. The Three Ugly Sisters were planned and passed and are now going up at an alarming rate, as is their NWDA funding partner the new X-box museum on Mann Island.
Princes Dock has become Milton Keynes-On-Sea. What a joke, when even the spivs of the Fib-Dems did not want her. She obviously, true to form never turned up to any design meetings to discuss the architectural mess we now find ourselves in, with a World Heritage Disaster.

What a pathetic masquerade she has played with the urban landscape of my city, it is now obvious that she did not a clue what she was talking about.

He is mentioned on a website called Enemies of the People along with the Criminal Hurst of whom he said "I would trust him with my life".

With Frankeal as Design Champion and Berni Turner as Heritage Champion and Mike Storey in charge of Regeneration, Oh, and the complete and utter waste of space John Hinchliffe as World Heritage Officer, no wonder we are in such a mess.

One Park West-Voted One Park Worst by the public.

PR Stunt backfires big time. Think Publicity have not paid attention to the details and realised that this was going to show the whole North West what a sad carbuncle of a building it is, even stimulating nominations for other carbuncles.
They even showed the other Carbuncle Cup nomination, the Ferry Terminal and one of the interviewees declared that big white thing out of keeping which was the new egg-box museum.

It went down like a sinking ship all who were interviewed on BBC give it a downer.
Except MARTIN WATSON from Brock Carmicheal, the "helper" to Cesar Pelli the pretentious and arrogant architect. He said

When asked about it being a carbuncle he said "Well, I mean that's personal opinion" Just, who do these architect people think they are as if because they have turned up to to college, whether they learnt anything or not, their opinion is right and others are wrong and here he was standing in front of a carbuncle with the whole of BBC North West laughing at him. I wouldn't have shown my face, never mind admitted to being involved in this, what is now being described as in the shape of a boat. The PR firm should be re-named Not Thinking Publicity because if a boat was this shape it would be upside down.......are they mad?
Ed Hall from BBC said "People are saying you have got a world heritage site, and The Three Graces of Liverpool and questioning if that should be next to them"

Concourse House One Step Forward and Two Back.

During the recent posts of One Park Worst one of our colleagues suggested it was the new Concourse House. I think that is a fair assessment and it made me think about the way the building was hailed as a new dawn in the 60s as was St Johns market. It started me to think we are in the same position as that new dawn they promised us when the town centre was re-jigged a couple of decades ago and the Liverpool One of its day was built.

We finally get rid of the obscene 1960s monster on the Vista of Lime Street opposite St Georges Hall and then the communists from the Eastern Block move in and build us "The Breeze Blocks". This was a nomination for Liver pools Carbuncle Cup from a colleague of mine. Its one step forward and two back all the time with the morons who are planning my city.
The whole amateurish approach to planning our future by the Reichmarshal Nigel Lee and his planning team (sic) leaves me to fear that in no uncertain terms that we are building...The New Concourse Houses of their day with the likes of One Park "Gone" West. We are creating the new Milton Keynes-On-Sea. The Binge building is now over and we are waking up with a headache and none more so a headache as this Stazi brute which could not even be called architecture it is that bad.





Built under the guise of regeneration, this is degeneration of the worst kind it is another legacy that we will have to live with forever in the World Heritage Site.
Imagine building this in front of the Taj Mahal another World Heritage Site.

Where does Clever Trevor Jones now live and how long has he lived there for?

After knocking down the last ships chandlers next to the Grade II listed Baltic Fleet pub on behalf of Windsor Developments, who it was alleged had a director, who was struck off the accountants register for fraud, he buggered off and went a bit quiet

leaving us with a great gaping hole in the ground.

I was curious as to where he lived
it took me a while to place where he has been residing. Today's letters page of the Daily Post refreshed my memory with a letter from someone from, of all places Tushingham hall saying he saw him on the bus going to Chester. I would have thought the tight-arse would have been able to afford a chauffeur never mind use his bus pass to save £1.50 but some old habits die hard. My understanding from a good source is that it is alleged he is a neighbour to his Highness the Duke Of Grosvenor-pool and may in fact live on the Grosvenor (biggest landowner in Liverpool) estate. I just did a quick google earth search for CH4 9DG. The Letter.

Fine day out by bus
ON SATURDAY, I made use of my new bus pass to travel into Chester to collect my new car, bought with the help of the Government's Scrappage Scheme. I caught one of the smart new Helm's A41 Route buses in Tushingham, near the ancient Blue Bell Inn.
There were already quite a few passengers on the bus coming from Whitchurch. Its route is on through Malpas, Tilston, Tattenhall, Waverton and Christleton finishing its journey at Chester Railway Station. The timetables can be found on the CWAC website.
It is a pretty route with good views of the Welsh Hills, the Cheshire villages through which it passes and the South Cheshire countryside.
For the latter part of the journey, the bus was full and we had the company of two distinguished fellow passengers, Sir Trevor and Lady Jones, formerly of Liverpool Council. Fifty years ago there was a train which made the same journey between Whitchurch and Chester Stations, although in a straighter line. I am sure many people would enjoy the day out exploring this part of Cheshire and even North Shropshire which this bus service makes possible.

Liverpool One-RIBA Cronyism Six

Liverpool-One or Grosvenor-pool has been nominated for a Stirling Prize for its master plan. Those Chumley Backslappers Anonymous at RIBA are apparently attempting to 'award themselves' a prize, as it is the scheme containing the most of its nominees.

Liverpool One is an intriguing inclusion, which probably got its place for being the masterplan with most RIBA members involved in it. There are great things about it: finally you can walk from the city to Albert Dock (a route with overbearing shopping opportunities) in relative comfort, which is a big improvement, and it tries hard to knit into the city fabric around it. But it’s a monocultural, privately regulated streetscape, filled with high-street multiples and providing little variation in grain. Also, the monumental public space closest to the water is one of the strangest made in recent years, with a big residential tower bookending an elevated, over-manicured green space.
The problem with this Stirling Prize shortlist is that it has nothing to do with good architecture, and everything to do with the jury being given a bit of everything. So we have a health building, a masterplan, an office and an art museum, plus the two superstar typologies of Maggie’s Centre and winery. Allford Hall Monaghan Morris’ health centre is another message sent - like the practice’s Westminster Academy in the context of new schools, Kentish Town Health Centre is the best primary care building of a wave of quite mediocre ones.

Well a Precinct could be up for a Stirling Prize! Is this the sad state of British Architecture apparent? I know we have been credit crunched but if this is the overall standard of this years architecture it is not the best of years.

For what Grosvenor have done to Chavasse Lawn and how it has helped to destroy the WORLD HERITAGE SITE, is very bad.....They promised us world class architecture a Cesar Pelli...and give us a Cesar Salad. And now they, at RIBA have nominated themselves for a prize for it.

Written in the euphoria of the opening of Liverpool One, a shopping centre that opened, ironically, just as we hit the worst retail recession for 80 years. All those moody shots of… shop fronts and escalators.
Liverpool One by David Littlefield.It says everything one would expect it to. It was funded and published by Grosvenor. It tells the story as they want it to be told.
But it fails to address questions like how much Grosvenor paid for the a third of Liverpool city centre. The people put out of business who lost their livelihoods don’t have a say, it just waxes lyrical, and it’s all from the developer’s point of view.
I am not sure who would buy such a book that at times is factually incorrect, especially the section about the Cesar Pelli monolith on Chavasse Park, in the World Heritage Site buffer zone, which was 12 storeys on the masterplan and increased to 17.
I had to navigate the city being dug up for years to get more choice for shirts, and now Grosvenor-pool has opened I still can’t find a decent one.
It praises the architects, the council, the duke, and the people who worked there. Anyone would think they had built Rome.
In reality it is not brilliant architecture. They knocked down The sixties Moat House and Steers House (two hated buildings) and built blocks in the same style, only 12 storeys higher. All the architectural critics have now had their say, but as the dust settles this is a book about a shopping centre, an open roofed Trafford Park in the City. Yippeee!

As the author of the book, it's clearly not up to me to say whether it's any good or not. But (equally clearly) Mr Colquhoun doesn't like the Liverpool One development, which is entirely predictable, bearing in mind his role at the local preservation trust. However, his view of the book is jaundiced by his view of the development itself. Rather than waxing lyrical, the book contains some material that makes uncomfortable reading for Grosvenor, as the project didn't go entirely according to plan. Grosvenor has been honest about things which most private firms would not make public. Also, Grosvenor did not publish the book - Wiley did, and they are certainly not in the business of publishing the sort of puffery Mr Colquhoun suggests it is. As for the question of how much Grosvenor paid the city council for the site - the answer is in the book (it's a percentage of rental income). As for the Duke, he gets 2 or 3 brief mentions in a book of 40,000 words. Mr Colquhoun hasn't reviewed this book - he's used it as an opportunity to criticise the project itself. I would hope that most readers would find a far greater degree of objectivity in this book than he suggests.

He has been paid for it (by Grosvenor or the publishers) so he's alright I suppose. I just cant understand why anyone would want a book about a shopping centre.......and not a very good one at that. I have to say that I love modern design and all this critisizm about not being able to judge modernism is really silly. Bad or boring architecture is the same no matter what style or era it is. The secret is being able to see that and not be persuaded by a load of press pack tosh. Talking of which here is the Daily Ghost review.

WHAT ANNOYS ME IS THAT HE, BEING PAID BY GROSVENOR HAS PROPEGATED UNTRUTHS ABOUT THE CESAR PELLI BUILDING ON CHAVASSE PARK. Yes he says it is not universaly liked (a understatement). BUT HE WRONGLY CLAIMS THAT THE BUILDING WAS REDUCED FROM 20 TO 17. THIS IS RUBBISH. The building was 12 Storeys on the master plan and the greedy Grosvenor wacked the height up to 20 so they got 17. I know this because I was there at the planning meeting. This has now backfired on them. Chavasse Park a Monument to Greed

Rod Holmes came in my shop today.
I left him very wound up last time I spoke with him. The usual calm and collective Rodney who pulled the whole scheme together for the Duke of Grosvenor-pool and Westminster was annoyed with me. I had dared to state that the project was like a Trafford Park in the city without a roof on. He went for it “Well that’s just your opinion” he said he got very agitated at one time.
Florence Gersten and I were objectors to the absolutely horrendous Cesar Pelli tower on Chavasse Park in the buffer zone. He had been very worried, we having brought Unesco into Liverpool for a reactive monitoring mission had complained to the Chief Planning officer that they had started work without planning consent. Subsequently a planning committee approval was sought in no time at all. Lady Dorian Jones vacated the chair because she knew the applicant. She had recently publicly stated how she had such a wonderful time at the Duke of Westminster’s daughters wedding…. er hang on the chair of the planning committee who Warren Bradley the council leader stated publicly had mentored him, whose address came up as CH4 9DG, which is on the Dukes Estate ....how curious.

David” I don’t live in Liverpool” Irving the deputy chair passed it while the convicted Councillor Hurst tried to agitate me to put me off. They already had it passed in my opinion and now we have something resembling Widnes Tech on the Liverpool skyline. Rodney was back to his usual calm self today and I did not wind him. His wife had told him about my shop, not sure if he knew it was me who runs it, as he may not have come in.
I had listened to a Radio 4 programme today about the recession and the subsequent empty shops. The presenter was in Chester while the interviewees were claiming a lot of people had gone shopping to Liverpool 1 hitting the town hard. So the Duke of Westminster who has a vast estate, just outside Chester, has helped kill the town because he built Liverpool 1. How strange is that, is that like shooting yourself in the foot or what?

Rod is now chair of Mersey Partnerships. He was mopping beads of sweat last time I was speaking to him calling us the Heritage People “Well we tried to engage everybody”. He said and I stopped him and said “Mr Holmes why do you look at those who love their city as enemies".

He stopped and paused “ Sometimes Mr Holmes your enemies are your best friends in disguise, they are the ones that tell you the truth” I proclaimed.

I wish him well in his new job but we need to keep an eye on Peel Holdings who have far too much power.

The flats at Chavasse Park that we and others objected to, have been reduced again to 90k because they have not sold. They will also give you 5k of furniture free that’s a minimum of 20% down in the year since they went on the market. The potential buyers reneged, so they have not sold. The reality is that if Grosvener and the council Spivs who pushed it through increasing its height from 12 Storeys on the master plan to 17 storeys had of listened they would not have had an empty block and an eyesore in the World Heritage Site, that we will have to live with forever, or until it falls down in 30 years. Sometimes people don’t listen.

Captain Chavasse will be turning in his grave with this as monument to his sacrifice.
