9 Madryn Street, Ringos House-Why Knock It Down?

There is no point to destroy an area of cultural significance such as this.
This is the City that knocked down the Cavern Club and then called itself Beatles City.
Remember this garbage from Catherine Jones of the Oldham Echo, spin us another one Catherine.
I wrote about it a few weeks ago and I can now confirm that the City Council own the house as it has been passed from Merseytravel and the clutches of Neil Scales.
Just what he was doing with it is beyond me. http://liverpoolpreservationtrust.blogspot.com/2010/11/why-does-merseytravel-own-ringos-house.html

Couldn't someone just intervene and save it and knock through a few of the houses on the same block and make a visitor centre. What a springboard to the revival of the area, that 30 years after the riots is still having a rough old time.

Local Mp and all round lazy sod Louise Ellman, oh I do apoligise she may be busy, but not in her own constituency.

The Guardian had the news that the housing Minister has written to Liverpool City Council urging them to save Ringo's house in Madryn Street.
The only people who seem to want to destroy it are the city council. Joe Anderson should intervene instead of spining us line after line of rubbish about this subject that should be cut and dried.

Let it be: 9 Madryn Street, Ringo Starr's childhood home, could be saved from demolition after the intervention of an MP.
January 2nd 2011
The terrace house where the former Beatle Ringo Starr was born could be saved from demolition after the intervention of a government minister.
The house at 9 Madryn Street, in the Dingle area of Liverpool, was due to be bulldozed as part of a multimillion-pound regeneration scheme. But Grant Shapps, the housing minister, has asked Liverpool city council to postpone the demolition of the house where the Beatles drummer was born in 1940, to allow more time for alternative plans to be considered.
"Any regeneration project will generate strong feelings," said Shapps. "But when what many people consider to be a culturally important building, such as the birthplace of the drummer in the world's most famous band, is at risk then feelings are going to be even stronger. That is why, before a single bulldozer rumbles along Madryn Street, I want to ensure every option has been considered. In particular, I want local community groups to have the opportunity to put forward viable proposals to preserve this historic house."
The minister's intervention follows a campaign by a group of Beatles fans. If the council ignores Shapps's request, his department has the power to step in to halt the project.
English Heritage has rejected a request for the property to be given listed status. Officials said it did not deserve a preservation order as it lacked "historic or architectural importance".
Some 445 pre-1919 terrace houses in Dingle's Welsh Streets neighbourhood will be replaced as part of the scheme. Starr, 70, lived at Madryn Street for the first few years of his life. A nearby home, 10 Admiral Grove, where he lived for 20 years, will remain standing.
The decision to demolish houses on Madryn Street was made in August but Liverpool's planning committee will meet this month to finalise the details. Liverpool city council says the ageing properties are "beyond economic repair", adding that local residents are desperate for better housing.
A spokesman said: "Grant Shapps may not be aware of the fact that we have consulted extensively with local residents over these plans and the overwhelming majority are in favour of them. Residents have been fully involved in developing the proposals and have shown they want decent homes to replace houses which have long passed their lifespan.
"They are telling us that they are absolutely sick of the delays and the conditions they have to live in. They want the city council to demolish these properties as soon as possible so that they can get on with their lives.
"It is vital for local people that this scheme goes ahead. We have not been helped by the massive cuts, but we are determined to get on with this work to improve the lives of local residents."
The childhood homes of John Lennon – Mendips, in Menlove Avenue – and Sir Paul McCartney – in Forthlin Road – are popular tourist attractions run by the National Trust. George Harrison's Arnold Grove childhood home remains a private house.
Last month a zebra crossing on Abbey Road in north London was given Grade II-listed status, even though it was moved in the 1970s, years after the band were photographed there for the cover of their Abbey Road album.

Peace Monument Unveiled For John Lennons 70th Birthday-Give Bad Sculpture A Chance.

Any Old Iron- Liverpool European Capital of Bad Beatles Statues. It has to be said.
The tradition was upheld with the unveiling of another naff piece of junk this Saturday.
The unveiling was done by Julien and Cynthia, who understandably had a difficult day holding back the emotions. John Lennon is and was an amazing person and an inspiration, who was able to think out of the box, not to be drawn in by what was being told to him, not believing people selling you rubbish, never accepting the status quo.  Educated in the university of life he must be turning in his grave with the naff tributes to him that now litter the streets of Liverpool. The Four Lads who made me cry on the Hard Days Night Hotel, George Harrison looks like Gandolf from Lord of the Rings. Rod Holmes the head man of Grosvenor was there, I saw him on Sky, it went all round the world. Uncle Joe Anderson was there saying how great it was, what does he know of style over spin, what does he know of good public art. The builder of Chavasse Lawn, Grosvenor, the pseudo park 40 feet in the air, that has now been dug up and relaid where water is streaming down the steps because of its inferior design and its jerry-built lack of quality love this sculpture and how it gets them attention. Grosvenor would not put a tribute to Captain Chavasse V.C and Bar, instead they have gone for the obvious, give them what they want, naffness.
Captain Chavasse would maybe approve in one way, with te sentiment, Give Peace a Chance as he was killed in action in a First World War that killed millions, but there is no substitute for inferior workmanship and bad design. When it comes to public monuments and Tom Murphy did a botoxed version of the great man Captain Chavasse, that now doesn't have a home, on the off chance he could knock it in to Grosvenor, with the help of his personal PR man, David Charters of the Daily Ghost, his bessie mate, who wouldnt know a decent statue if one fell on him. There is something the people who make the decisions on Liverpool's public art have no or little understanding of......quality.  http://liverpoolpreservationtrust.blogspot.com/2009/06/rod-holmes-came-in-my-shop-today.html

It is a scandal that we have the worst Beatles monuments in the world while Madryn Street Ringos birthplace, is being bulldozed. This is a city that knocked down the Cavern Club, just before calling itself Beatles City and turns its World Heritage Site into Milton Keynes-On-Sea. One thing is good they didn't let Tom Murphy the pudding maker of the John Lennon Turkey at the John Lennon Airport do this one. Why not just call us Lennonpool and be done with it? Thanks to Correspondent in regularly pointing out the fact that we don't just have the Beatles. pic Chavasse Park being repaired after 1 year http://condensedthoughts.blogspot.com/2010/10/statement-from-lennonpool-city-council.html Stop Press at Oldham Hall Street..............At the Shanghai Expo, The Scaffold are reforming (Mike McCartney should be on one) http://liverpoolpreservationtrust.blogspot.com/2010/07/mike-mccartney-professional-scouser-and.html  on October the 16th to impress those big investors that we are still all Lilly the Pink in Lennonpool.  http://profchucklebuttychronic.blogspot.com/2010/07/another-330k-for-liverpool-day-at.html
Catherine Jones the Daily Dimwits intrepid, err, journalist covering the monumental Lennon Give Bad Sculpture A Chance event covered the Ken Dodd one also.
The last big unveiling was of a Tom Murphy was Ken Dodd with a kebab in his hand at Lime Street Station and Bessie Braddocks, a sack with a head on it.  http://liverpoolpreservationtrust.blogspot.com/2009/07/liverpool-european-capital-ofbad.html Tom Murphy, Liverpools finest, yes that is how bad things have become. Neil Scales of Merseytravel who cut up the U-534 commissioned it. http://liverpoolpreservationtrust.blogspot.com/2010/06/u-534-cut-up-into-five-pieces-by-neil.html
David Backyard the architect of Cavern Walks said to me his one regret was commissioning the Beatles Statue inside it. Just who put the one of Elvis in Mathew Street. I like Arthur Dooleys the Four Lads Who Shook The World  http://liverpoolpreservationtrust.blogspot.com/2010/09/arthur-dooley-remember-him.html and instead of saving his studio and honouring him the city leaders follow the crowd and give them what they want......Bad Beatles Sculpture......Any Old Iron.

Dr David Fleming-Now He Is Whinging About Budget Cuts.

IT just has to make you laugh. after the last couple of days when the Director of Liverpool Museums has been found out to be in dispute with yet another body working for them. The new architects for the White Elephant-On-Sea, museum in the world heritage site has claimed an extra 500k in costs. This has to be paid in 10 days. With an extra £32,000 in costs.
Now good old Catherine Jones, who proclaimed to me to be running the Oldham Echo, Stop the Rot campaign, that never stopped anything, gets the chance for Trinity "Smoking" Mirrors to placate David "Fuzzy Felt" Fleming who has complained about the coverage. He knows it works everytime he complains he gets extra coverage, to placate him, even though he was wrong in the first place to complain. http://liverpoolpreservationtrust.blogspot.com/2010/07/dr-david-fleming-five-faces-of.html

 http://www.liverpooldailypost.co.uk/liverpool-news/regional-news/2010/07/16/merseyside-arts-bodies-face-armageddon-budget-cuts-92534-26865327/

Now he whines;

MAJOR budget cuts facing Merseyside arts bodies were last night described as “Armageddon”.

And National Museums Liverpool chief David Fleming said the organisation was looking at every option including selling assets, redundancies, closures of sites and reduced opening times.
Yesterday, the bosses of Britain’s biggest arts bodies met in London to make an impassioned plea for the government to think again about axing up to 40% from culture budgets, being considered as part of the imminent Spending Review.
They argued that, while the cultural sector is willing to play its part in the country’s economic recovery with “realistic cuts”, “the 25-40% cuts being proposed would be catastrophic as they come on top of 3.5% cuts this year as well as the cultural sector’s £322m contribution to the cost of the Olympics.”
National Museums Liverpool (NML) receives £21m from central government, which forms the majority of its budget. A cut of 25% would see it lose £5.25m, while 40% would equate to £8.4m.
Mr Fleming said: “There’s sharing the burden, and there’s deciding where you do least harm. At the moment, it’s just everybody gets the same. I’ve had several meetings with staff and they are being very constructive.
“It’s Armageddon and we’ve all got to work together to get through it.”

Maybe the local papers should wake up to the fact this carbuncle in the world heritage site is the worst cultural disaster to hit Liverpool since the Second World War.

MAYBE IF HE HAD NOT WASTED SO MUCH MONEY PAYING OUT COVENANTS AND LEGAL DISPUTES WITH 3XN AND THEN ARGUING WITH THE NEW ARCHITECTS, HIS, NO, OUR, ORGANISATION WOULD NOT BE IN SUCH A MESS.

Lewis's is to close 300 jobs to go-The Regeneration Con Continues.

Today it is announced that 300 staff are to lose their jobs as Lewis's in Renshaw Street is to close. The pathetic Catherine Jones working for the Oldham Echo reviewed the new book that records its sorry state and gets put right by people leaving comments for not doing her research http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-news/local-news/2010/02/20/reminder-of-forgotten-glamour-in-liverpool-store-lewis-s-1950s-time-capsule-100252-25873874/ It was blitzed during the war.
I knew there was something going on when it was listed. This will be around the time that all the plans were laid before Henry Owen-John, the regional development director of English Heretics. http://liverpoolpreservationtrust.blogspot.com/2009/05/henry-owen-john-english-heretic.html
David Bartlett today reports.
LIVERPOOL’S famous Lewis’s store is to close.

The firm must move out by June due to the massive redevelopment of its the Ranelagh Street building..
Around 300 “devastated” staff members are set to lose their jobs.
David Thompson, who owns the store, said there was no guarantee it would reopen once the building work was finished in around two years time.
Developers Merepark have ambitious plans to create a £160m Central Village around the store which will include new hotels, leisure space, retail outlets and restaurant space.
“It is with great regret that we have to announce the closure of Lewis’s store, as our lease with Merepark expires in June,” said Mr Thompson.
“It has now become apparent from Merepark that once the scheduled works commence it would be impossible for us to continue trading from within this building, however we will continue talking to the landlord about possible space within any new development but at this stage no new lease has been agreed.”
He said all orders would be honoured as the store starts the process of selling off £5m of stock.
A full scale closing down programme will start tomorrow and it will only be a matter of weeks before the store, founded by David Lewis 154 years go closes its doors for the last time.

This is because of a central village scheme which Warren Bradley...why is he always apearing to be on the side of the developers. We all know he was put into the spot by Clever Trevor Jones (who in my opinion was a spiv)  http://liverpoolpreservationtrust.blogspot.com/2009/09/trevor-jone-steps-down-good-riddance.html and Mike Storey, but how can Bradley really be so short sighted or disinterested in Liverpool shopworkers jobs.
Last week in the local papers a spat broke out over the Central village scheme http://www.liverpooldailypost.co.uk/liverpool-news/regional-news/2010/02/19/clash-over-affordable-housing-in-liverpool-city-centre-schemes-92534-25868341/
PLANS to build two skyscrapers behind Liverpool’s Central station came under fire last night for not containing enough affordable housing.

Liverpool Council’s Labour group is opposing the £100m Central Village project, claiming it could “price ordinary people out of the market”.
But Liberal Democrat council leader Cllr Warren Bradley said the city could not afford to risk driving developers away from investing by imposing limits on new schemes.
But Liverpool’s current housing strategy declares the “development of significant low-cost market housing or affordable home ownership in the city centre should not be encouraged”.

Last night, the Liberal Democrats said a balance should be struck across the city.
Cllr Bradley said: “It is easy to talk about social and affordable housing, but to me it is about long-termism.
“Every development which comes into the city has to be judged on its own merits.”
Councillor Bradley is not very clever in my opinion.

Rapid Hardware was the longest shop front in the country and as such is now the longest empty shop front in the country. http://www.liverpooldailypost.co.uk/liverpool-news/regional-news/2009/08/20/liverpool-one-developer-grosvenor-buys-old-rapid-hardware-site-100252-24490295/ What is the point in doing up one part of the city to let another face decay.   http://liverpoolpreservationtrust.blogspot.com/2009/08/grosvenor-pool-new-name-for-liverpool.html I have watched Peter pay Paul all my life. http://www.liverpooldailypost.co.uk/liverpool-news/regional-news/2008/03/13/180m-liverpool-central-village-scheme-set-to-start-in-autumn-64375-20617750/
